What to Expect When You Contact a Mental Health Crisis Service

If you've never contacted a mental health crisis helpline before, you might feel nervous. That's completely normal. Here's what typically happens when you reach out for crisis support:

You'll be met with kindness and understanding. Mental health crisis workers are trained to listen without judgment.

You can talk about anything affecting your mental health. There's no "right" thing to say.

You stay in control of the conversation. You can share as much or as little as you want.

They'll help you feel safer. Whether that's through active listening, helping you create a mental health safety plan, or connecting you with further crisis support services.

You don't need to be in crisis to call. If you're struggling with your mental health, that's enough.

With mental health support, things can and do get better. Reaching out for crisis support is the bravest thing you can do.
